The Man Within (Breed series, book 2) by Lora Leigh 11/14/9
I liked this more than book 1. Roni was a strong heroine, and I really enjoyed the history that she and Taber shared. I already have books 3-5 ready to go on my ereader!

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, book 1) by Maggie Stiefvater 9/22/9 (YA) AUDIOBOOK
(Warning: book link automatically starts an audioclip.)
Audiobook read by David LeDoux and Jenna Lamia.
To read more about Shiver, read my review post.
After a wolf attack when she was 11, Grace has always felt deeply connected to the wolves who live in the woods behind her house. Especially, the yellow-eyed wolf who watches her from the trees.
Sam is part of a pack who spend summers as humans and winters as wolves. He’s always watched over the girl who survived his pack members’ attack. When circumstances bring them together, both when Sam is wolf and young man, such a beautiful love story unfolds.
It was easy to overlook a few minor quibbles (absentee, clueless parents, natch) in light of the beautiful story.

The Awakening (Darkest Powers trilogy, book 2) by Kelley Armstrong 9/6/9

|
|
Audiobook read by Kate Reading.
I was reminded very strongly of Bridget Jones Diary (I saw the movie, I didn’t read the book.) This was a sweet funny story that had me laughing out loud more than once. When Emma spills all (and I mean ALL) of her secrets to the stranger sitting next to her on a disastrous plane ride, little does she know that she is telling them to the owner of the company she works for.
Hijinks ensue, and I really cheered for her when she finally grew a backbone, stood up to her toxic cousin and clueless parents. I think, however, I would have enjoyed this story much more if it was shorter. (Maybe 6-7 discs instead of 9?)

|
Flashpoint (Troubleshooters series, book 7) by Suzanne Brockmann 9/3/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Melanie Ewbank & Patrick Lawlor.
This felt like a “rebuilding” book, with a whole new cast of characters. Tom Paoletti and a few of the other regulars in this series make very brief appearances in this book, which was a little disappointing.
However, the story itself, which focused on Jimmy and Tess was interesting. It takes place almost entirely in Kazbekistan, and was interesting to revisit it years after the events in Stan and Teri’s book.
Flashpoint won’t go down as my favorite Troubleshooters book, but it is still a good story.

Read my August Re-Read Challenge review here.
This was a really enjoyable re-read. The 70’s-era story stood up well, and it reminded me what a great writer Mary Stewart was.
Bryony and her telepathic “secret lover” come together against the backdrop of her father’s possible murder and a crumbling estate complete with a moat and hedge maze.

|
Ain’t She Sweet? by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 8/28/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Kate Fleming/Anna Fields.
I had avoided this story because I didn’t know how I could sympathize with the heroine after reading the book description. Sugar Beth is a down on her luck former “mean girl” who returns to her small southern hometown to rebuild her life. She encounters her former high school teacher, whom she had falsely accused of sexual misconduct when she was a high school senior. Needless to say, sparks fly when they meet again.
I should have had more faith in Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ ability to write relate-able, touching characters. I actually got choked up as Sugar Beth is on the receiving end of her former victims’ wrath at a disastrous dinner party.
This was a really great book!

|
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, book 1) 8/27/9 YA AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Jesse Bernstein.
This was a really fun adventure, that has appeal for middle-school kids through adults. Percy Jackson is a kid who has bounced around from school to school, struggling with dyslexia, and trying to avoid bullies.
His adventures begin when he realizes that there are mysterious beings trying to kill him, and he discovers he has previously unknown abilities.

|
Gone Too Far by Suzanne Brockmann (Troubleshooters series, book 6) 8/24/9
This was the long awaited Sam and Alyssa story that I’d been waiting for!
I’m not too crazy about a “falsely accused” story line, but in Suzanne Brockmann’s talented hands it was great. As a bonus, there was much more development on the Max and Gina storyline. Again, another great installment of the Troubleshooters series.

|
An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris (Harper Connelly series, book 3) 8/21/9
Re-read. Something special coming soon!

|
Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready (WVMP Radio series, book 1) 8/20/9
I’ve been meaning to get to this series for a while, and had both books 1 & 2 on my tbr shelf.
I really liked this story of quirky vamps working in a nighttime radio station. Heroine Ciara Griffin was an original UF heroine. Not kick-ass, with a murky “ethically-challenged” past as a con-woman, I found Ciara likeable and interesting.
I’ll hopefully be picking up book 2, Bad to the Bone off the tbr shelf really soon.

|
Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh (Breeds series, book 1) 8/19/9 EBOOK
This was a fun, light, and very sexy read.
A few times, I wanted to shake heroine, Merinus for her seemingly willful naiveté, but I really liked Callan, and his totally over-the-top alphaness.
This was an interesting world that Lora Leigh is establishing, and I’ve got book 2 on my Palm, ready to go.

|
Into the Night by Suzanne Brockmann (Troubleshooters series, book 5) 8/17/9
I’m still gobbling this series down. I really liked this one, though at time I was a bit impatient with Joan DaCosta’s reluctance to get over being 7 years older than Mike Muldoon, and fighting the relationship as much as she did. However, I really loved getting insight into Sam’s wife, Mary Lou, in this one. She really wasn’t just “the bimbo” and really came to life for me.
It was interesting to read this one, the first Troubleshooters that was post-9/11. It made perfect sense that this series would be greatly affected by the real, tragic event.

|
|
This was a nice, sweet romantic suspense. The mystery part of it wasn’t too much of a surprise, but it was well done. What I enjoyed much about this book was the lovely beta hero, Mike McCulloch. He’s raising his niece and running the family newspaper. There was a lot of “untapped potential” in him that made him a very interesting character to me.
For some reason, Pepper reminded me of Stephanie Plum. I think it was that little hard (but not too hard) edge to her that called her to mind.
Overall, I really enjoyed it, and while I probably won’t run out and buy her entire backlist, I’ll definitely pick up more of Jodi Thomas’ books when I come across them.

|
First Comes Marriage (Huxtable series, book 1) by Mary Balogh 8/14/9
A highly enjoyable historical, with a “Darcy-type” hero and a down to earth heroine. Much is made of Vanessa plainness, but very quickly Elliot sees past the surface.
I’ve requested book 2 in the series, Then Comes Seduction, in audiobook format from the library.

|
Enchanting the Lady (Relics of Merlin series, book 1) by Kathryne Kennedy 8/13/9

|
Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey 8/13/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Susan Ericksen.
Wow, this was a great, really original story. I loved the southwestern setting, which I don’t see often enough. The dusty, military outpost town is little more than a prison, with it’s inhabitants who have little hope of ever leaving. They are supposedly under constant threat by “insurgents” from over the border, yet when a mysterious man comes from the outside, a chain of events result in the birth of a girl who comes to symbolize hope and resistance.

|
Death of a Cad by MC Beaton (Hamish MacBeth Mystery series, book 2) 8/11/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Davina Porter.
I’ve only ever watched the BBC series, and have meant to try this cozy mystery series for ages. It was exactly what I expected: a really enjoyable mystery with engaging characters, especially Hamish.
The mystery kept me guessing and while I’m bummed that it’s impossible to get a hold of more of the earlier books in audio CD format from the library, I really want to try to read this series in order.

|
My Soul to Lose by Rachel Vincent (Soul Screamers series, prequel novella) 8/10/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Amanda Ronconi.
This was a good introduction to Rachel Vincent’s new YA series. Kaylee doesn’t know why she is compelled to scream when she encounters someone who is about to die. Everyone around her is convinced that she is mentally ill, something which Kaylee herself is also afraid is true.
This novella was strong enough that tipped the scales for me, and I bought book 1, My Soul to Take, after listening to this free audio download.

|
Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning (Highlander series, book 1) 8/9/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Phil Gigante.
I love KMM’s Fever series, and just haven’t gotten around to checking out this earlier pnr series. Phil Gigante was great, and while it won’t replace the very dark Fever series as my favorite KMM series, it was a fun, much lighter book.

|
Out of Control by Suzanne Brockmann (Troubleshooters series, book 4) 8/9/9
I’ve been wondering how Ken “Wildcard” Karmody was going to make the transition from the shattered ex-girlfriend obsessed guy in Over the Edge to hero material for Out of Control. But not only did he make the transition, but he is now one of my favorite Troubleshooters heroes.
He is so out there with his emotions and I found his intensity really compelling. Savannah was a good heroine, though I had a few frustrations with her not coming clean with Ken earlier.
In all, though, a really great Troubleshooters story.

|
Darkborn by Alison Sinclair (Darkborn trilogy, book 1) 8/7/9
I really loved this really original world and story, centered on the Darkborn, a people who are sightless, perceiving the world through sound waves, and can be killed by sunlight. who live side by side with another group who are sighted, but unable to function in the dark.
Plenty of intrigue, shifting viewpoints, and mysteries. Telmaine, is afraid to let anyone, including her gentle husband Balthasar know that she has “abilities” which allow her to use magic. Ishmael, a magic using social outcast is drawn to Telmaine, and is the only one to discover her closely guarded secret.

|
|
Audiobook read by Nick Landrum.
Melissa Marr is taking this series in ever more interesting directions.
I LOVE what she has done with “Seth’s story” by giving him much more depth and complexity. The Wicked Lovely world of fae intrigue was so interesting, and I really loved Sorcha’s character. I can’t wait to see what happens next with this series.

|
Hell Cop anthology by Astrid Amara, Nicole Kimberling, and Ginn Hale (M/M) 8/5/9 EBOOK
Published by Loose Id in ebook format, and features novellas by Astrid Amara, Nicole Kimberling, and Ginn Hale.
This was 3 novellas set in an alternate universe with a demon races and technology. It was a good read, though I found that the 3 novella-format made it easy to put down between stories. My favorite was by Astrid Amara, and (like all 3 stories) involved the demon law enforcement unit known as the “Hell Cops.”

|
Borrower of the Night (The First Vicky Bliss Mystery) by Elizabeth Peters 8/1/9
I read a lot of Barbara Michael’s (Elizabeth Peters’ other pseudonym) when I was a teenager, and really loved her blend of mystery, romantic, and supernatural elements. I found that I didn’t really enjoy EP’s Amelia Peabody historical mysteries enough to stick with the series (Amelia drove me batty after a while) but wanted to give this series a try.
It was ok, though Vicky was (like Amelia) a little too “know it all” for my taste. The mystery itself was fun — hidden art treasure in a mouldy German castle, but not enough for me to stick with the series.

|
Broken Wing by Judith James 7/30/9
The Broken Wing Challenge.
To read more about Broken Wing, check out my review here.
I had really mixed feelings about this book. Some things, like the characters and plot were wonderful. However, the narrative style drove me nuts with too much telling and not enough showing. In the end, though, I liked the book enough that I will be sure to check out her September 2009 release, Highland Rebel.

|
Over the Edge (Troubleshooters series, book 3) by Suzanne Brockmann 7/30/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Laura Hicks.
I’ve totally fallen in love with this series! Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok and pilot Lt. Teri Howe’s romance amid a hostage crisis in Kazbekistan, was suspenseful, romantic, and exciting. I’m also loving the development of the romance between Sam and Alyssa, as well as the character development of the other members of Navy SEALS Team Sixteen.
The audiobook narrator was good, though not as good as book 2’s narrator.

|
First Lady by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 7/28/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Kate Fleming (Anna Fields).
I haven’t yet read/listened to a SEP book that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. This one was no exception. It was funny, sweet, and romantic. Nealy, the President’s widow, and Mat, a journalist who is taking his ex-wife’s children to their grandmother, fight and fall in love while crossing the country in a Winnabego.

|
The Defiant Hero (Troubleshooters series, book 2) by Suzanne Brockmann 7/27/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Carrington MacDuffie. To read more about The Defiant Hero and my growing love for this series, check out my post.
I’m totally falling in love with this series! Suzanne Brockmann is so accomplished at juggling many complex storylines and making her books flow as they race toward the climax.
I love the WWII romance storyline in this book. I was holding my breath till the last scene, hoping things would work out for Rafe and Eve.
While Meg drove me a little crazy with her reluctance to rely on Nils to help her rescue her kidnapped daughter, they still really worked for me as a couple.

|
Deeper by Megan Hart 7/25/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Savannah Richards.
I was persuaded by Carolyn Jean to pick this one up. I wasn’t too sure about the “ghosty” element of the romance, but this was such a powerful read!
Told at 2 points in Bess’ life, Deeper jumps between 20 year old Bess’ summer romance with “townie” Nick, and 40 year old Bess’ encounter with Nick, who still appears to be in his 20’s. Beautiful and compelling, I really loved this story. Also, Savannah Richards’ reading was excellent.

|
Faefever (Fever series, book 3) by Karen Marie Moning 7/23/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Joyce Bean.
This installment of the Fever series was fast paced and extremely dark. All hell has broken loose in Dublin. Literally. Mac isn’t sure whom she can trust— Barrons or V’lane. Dark fae are wreaking havoc. And, the Lord Master continues to gain power.
This book ended on a big cliffhanger, so I’m really glad it took me a while to get around to this book. Now, I don’t have to wait too long (August 18, 2009) till the next book in the series, Dreamfever, is released.

Zoe is one of Loretta Chase’s “fallen heroines”. She escaped life in a harem and is now trying to reestablish herself in polite society. When she returns to England, after being presumed dead for years, Lucien can’t help but reawaken to the feelings he’s cut himself off from after so many losses in his life.
I love Loretta Chase, and this book was classic Chase. Smart heroine, great dialogue, and a wonderful story.

|
Walk Away (Alpha series, book 1) by Treva Harte 7/19/9 Ebook novella.
I love shifter stories, but this one didn’t really do it for me. I’ve read great things about book 2 in this series, but I’m not sure if I’m going to get around to it.

|
Relentless (Federation series, book 2) by Anne Stuart 7/19/9
This is the first book I’ve read by Lauren Dane, and I really loved it! It was a great balance of interesting scifi world building and erotic romance. Although I don’t usually read books out of series order because I don’t like to feel like I’m missing something, I never felt like I was reading an info dump, or like I was clueless about what was going on.

|
Ice Blue (Ice series, book 3) by Anne Stuart 7/18/9
Audiobook read by Gabra Zackman.
I really enjoyed this book, especially the very alpha Takashi O’Brien. He was an angry bad-ass, but I loved every minute he was on the page. Summer and Taka run from L.A. to the Pacific Northwest to Japan, chased by fanatics and a crazy cult leader.
The only thing that disappointed me in this roller-coaster of a book was that at the end, Summer let Taka of the hook far too easily. He seriously owed her a grovel, and I felt cheated out of it.

|
Her Royal Spyness (Lady Victoria Georgiana series, book 1) by Rhys Bowen 7/17/9
To read more about Her Royal Spyness check out my post here.
Very entertaining, light historical mystery.

|
Specials (Uglies series, book 3) by Scott Westerfeld 7/16/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook performed by Carine Montbertrand.
Another installment of this series. Tally is now part of the elite “Specials” group, and still trying to figure out where she stands, amid the rapidly deteriorating society of Pretties.
This is the conclusion of the trilogy, though there is one more book left in the series, Extras, which seems to take place sometime later, in the same world.

|
Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood, book 3) by JR Ward 7/15/9
Another fun installment of the BDB. I was really looking forward to this book since it was Zsadist’s story. Bella and Z’s story was really good, though I did reach a point where I wanted them to stop with the drama and get together. Of course, then the book would have been about 75 pages shorter. However, when the finally do come together, it’s worth the wait!
Of course, so much pivotal stuff happens to the members of the BDB in the book, and I can’t wait to get to Butch’s story. (Though there IS a part of me that wishes his story was with V. lol
Oh yeah, and I have a new favorite Brother: Phury.

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler 7/12/9
I read this over 20 years ago, and I hardly remembered any of it. It was a good, pulp detective novel, with all the tropes you’d expect: hard boiled detective, femme fatale,
- Raymond Chandler at Fantastic Fiction’s site.

|
Excellent gripping story of a young girl whose villiage is surrounded by a forrest filled with zombies. Not exactly a light story, but it was a quick read, and I couldn’t stop turning pages to see what would happen to Mary and the people around her.
I had a couple of problems with not understanding some characters’ motivations, but that was a minor issue with compared to how good this story was.
- Carrie Ryan’s site.
- Excerpt for The Forrest of Hands and Teeth.

|
Beautifully written book. I loved the opposites attract storyline. (I seem to be reading a lot of these, lately!)
There was so much wonderful “mirroring” going on, with the relationships Lydia and James had with their fathers. The journey they take to their hea is complex, without being overly complicated.
And, Bound had one of the most beautifully written love scenes I’ve ever read. Great stuff!
- Meredith Duran’s site.
- Excerpt for Bound by Your Touch. (Scroll down linked page.)

|
My Forbidden Desire (My series, book 2) by Carolyn Jewel 7/8/9
I’m really loving this series. Much more “internal” than most pnr, the story focused really closely on the connection between the witch, Alexandrine and fiend, Xia. Xia is one of my favorite alpha heroes to come along in a while. He’s surly, explosive, and has a bad attitude. But there is just something about him that I love!

|
Breathing Room by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 7/8/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Kate Fleming (Anna Fields).
Another great SEP book, and another great reading by the late Anna Fields.
I loved seeing Isabel, a fallen from grace self-help guru and Ren, bad-boy actor come together. It was an opposites attract love story set in Tuscany. Told in SEP’s sweet, funny style. ‘Nuff said.

|
Dead and Gone (Southern Vampire series, book 9) by Charlaine Harris 7/6/9 AUDIOBOOK
Audiobook read by Johanna Parker.
GREAT installment of one of my favorite series! So much happened in this book, and I could not stop listening to the truly excellent audio production.

|
Curse the Dawn (Cassandra Palmer series, book 4) by Karen Chance 7/5/9
This is a series I really like, especially for the characters Cassie, Mircea, and Pritkin.
However, while the action and plot development were great, I found myself wishing that things would slow down enough that I’d get a little more character development. At one point I was thinking that I’d trade a chase scene/battle scene for the same amount of page space devoted to some quite time between Cassie and Pritkin (who is my favorite character.)
This concern, though, didn’t put me off the story. I really like some of the new things that have shown up in Cassie’s world, and the villain, Apollo, is a good one!

|
Instant Gratification (Wilder series, book 2) by Jill Shalvis 7/3/9
I really enjoyed book 1 in this series, Instant Attraction. Book 2 was even better!
I loved seeing how Emma, an uptight doctor from NYC who is in wishful to run her dad’s practice while he recovers from a heart attack, slowly opens herself to the mountain community of Wishful and in the process also falls for Stone. Her story really resonated with me.
Stone was wonderful. Very much a hero who was much more than the ski bum Emma first thinks he is. I so appreciated how, once Stone recognizes what his feeling are for Emma, he doesn’t agonize over them. He accepts them and moves forward.
Such a rewarding read!

Just what the doctor ordered! This book was such a fun, light read. I smiled through most of it. JQ is such a smart and insightful writer. There were moments when I wanted to punch the air and shout “Yes!” with joy.
Olivia was smart and sweet, and I loved Sir Harry, who is a wonderful beta hero.

|
Treasure Keeper (Drakkon series, book 4) by Shana Abé 7/1/9
I SO wanted to like this book. I’ve really enjoyed the previous 3 books in the series, and had really been looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, a lot of the story just didn’t hang together for me.
It actually started off really well, using Zoe’s journal to set the story. However, very quickly a lot of her decisions were perplexing for me. In the end, I think a lot of it came down to an overload of “telling” instead of “showing.” It resulted in my feeling disconnected from the heroine.
This was a big bummer for me, but I liked the series enough, that I stuck with this one to the end, and will try the next one in the series. That one will be a deal breaker for me as to whether or not I keep on reading the series.

|
Pretties (Ugles series, book 2) by Scott Westerfeld 7/1/9 AUDIOBOOK (YA)
Audiobook read by Carine Montbertrand.
Another great installment of this series. Tally is now pretty, and needs to get back to the Smokies so that they can see how treatment to combat “prettiness” has worked. I love how she is not some paragon of a teen heroine. She makes mistakes, she feels morally conflicted, and often the choices in front of her are not black and white. Before I even finished this audiobook (which is really great, btw) I went ahead and requested the next 2 in the series from the library.

|
Branded by Fire (Psy-Changeling series, book 6) by Nalini Singh 6/29/9
I was so excited to see this at Border’s this past weekend!
Mercy and Riley’s story was great. It was so wonderful, showing how the 2 dominant changelings were able to come together without needing to squash the other’s spirit. It also did a great job setting the stage for my favorite changeling, Hawke’s story, which will be told in the future.

My Wicked Enemy (My series, book 1) by Carolyn Jewel 6/26/9
I so loved Carolyn Jewel’s historical romance, Scandal, that I was curious about her paranormal series. Well, I was not disappointed!
MWE was had exciting action, an interesting world (mages, witches, fiends battling it out,) and excellent chemistry between the witch, Carson and the fiend, Nikodemus. However, it was the fiend, Xia that really had my attention, and I’m so excited that the second in the series, My Forbidden Desire, features him as the hero.

Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson series, book 4) by Patricia Briggs AUDIOBOOK 6/25/9
JUNE RE-READ CHALLENGE BOOK. Review is posted here.
Audiobook read by Lorelei King.
I loved revisiting this book in audio format. It took me a bit to get used to the narrator, who I so closely identify with her work reading the Stephanie Plum series. But, once I adjusted, I loved listening to Mercy’s story brought to life.

In the Blood (The Makers Song series, book 2) by Adrian Phoenix 6/24/9
To read more about this book, check out this post.
Very gothic in tone, this series is an interesting mix of uf, romance, and government conspiracy story. I loved learning more about Heather and Dante. Lucien’s story of the Elohim (Fallen Angels) was also really interesting.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman 6/22/9 (YA) AUDIOBOOK
I loved this sweet, gruesome YA story, and Neil Gaiman’s narration added to the “storytime” feel. Nobody (“Bod”) Owens is orphaned as a toddler, when his family is murdered by The Man Jack. The ghostly inhabitant’s of a graveyard take Bod in and protect and raise him.
The story was funny in the way that Nightmare Before Christmas is. By the end, I had a lump in my throat with it’s touching sweetness. Great stuff!

In Too Deep by Portia Da Costa 6/19/9
Totally escapist erotic romance. Lot’s of fun to read.
Librarian Gwendolyne starts getting sexy anonymous letters at work. She doesn’t know who’s sending them, but she’s hoping it’s the sexy professor who’s been doing research at her library. I was afraid it would feel stalkerish, but it doesn’t, and really reads like a fun, female fantasy.
Some of the bdsm was a little much for me, but it didn’t dominate the story, and the rest was a hoot.

A Hint of Wicked (Calton series, book 1) by Jennifer Haymore 6/17/9
A good dramatic historical. When Sophie’s husband Garrett, long presumed dead, returns after 8 years cured from amnesia, he finds his wife has not only remarried, but it’s to his cousin and best friend Tristan.
This book is fraught with emotion as the 3 navigate through the messy situation. I enjoyed this book very much, though I found a secondary plot line a little troublesome at times. I also wish there had been more time spent showing Sophie happy with at least one of the men, before the drama of Garrett’s return ratcheted the angst up into high gear.
However, on the whole I really liked AHoW, and I’ll be looking forward to Jennifer Haymore’s next book, A Touch of Scandal, due out early 2010.

In the Garden of Iden (The Company series, book 1) by Kage Baker 6/16/9
June’s TBR Challenge book
To read about In the Garden of Iden check out my review here.
A little slow on the start up, but in the end a really good and original story. Mendoza is a time travelling immortal who is in Inquisition-era Spain and Tudor England, trying to fulfill the mission of her employer, The Company.
I really liked her prickly personality, and the climax of the story had me turning pages as fast as I could.

|
Plum Spooky (A Stephanie Plum Between the Numbers novel) by Janet Evanovich 6/15/9 AUDIOBOOK
This was the usual Stephanie Plum antics. However, idk if it’s because these Between the Numbers novels have never been my favorites, but it sort of felt like the story was phoned in. I was hoping that this one, the first that is regular novel length would work better for me. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Also, there wasn’t enough Ranger in it for me!

|
The Unsung Hero (Troubleshooters series, book 1) by Suzanne Brockmann 6/14/9 AUDIOBOOK
I don’t read a lot of romantic suspense, but this was an enjoyable book. I liked the history Tom and Kelly had between them. I wasn’t expecting the story about Tom’s uncle and Kelly’s father that took place in WWII. It was really good. Often, I feel bugged by 2nd storylines, but this one was as interesting as the main one. I already have the audiobook of book 2, The Defiant Hero on request at the library.

|
|
This was a wonderful historical. I wasn’t always comfortable with what Gigi did, but I liked that she wasn’t a “perfect” heroine. Cam wasn’t perfect either, plotting and holding grudges instead of confronting Gigi about her behavior.
Sherry Thomas wrote a fun, smart romance about 2 people with some really awful history together finding a way to come back together, and learning from their mistakes and failings.

|
Uglies (Uglies series, book 1) by Scott Westerfeld 6/11/9 AUDIOBOOK (YA)
Great spec fiction YA! A suspenseful story about a seemingly utopian society where everyone is beautiful and parties all the time.
Of course, things aren’t that simple, and Tally Youngblood is caught up in events when she realizes that maybe she doesn’t want to be pretty.

|
Simply Unforgettable (The Simply Quartet, book 1) by Mary Balogh 6/10/9
Sweet historical romance. This is the first Balogh that I’ve read, and it was a good one. Honestly, writing this mini-review a couple of weeks later, I don’t remember many details without trying really hard, but I know I enjoyed it while I read it.
I will definitely read more by her when I want an enjoyable, light historical.

|
Rising Tides (Chesapeake Bay series, book 2) by Nora Roberts 6/8/9 AUDIOBOOK
I really liked Ethan, whose quiet and deliberate ways mask a man who’s still scarred by his tragic childhood. Grace, too, was strong and sweet. They have loved each other from afar for years. However, I was impatient with Grace, who sort of moved from the “I’m so happy we’re finally together” stage, to the “let’s get married and live hea” stage too fast for me.

This romantic suspense novel by debut author Jill Sorenson was a gripping read. I loved the locale, since it was one with which I’m a little familiar. I will definitely be reading her next book, Set the Dark on Fire, to be released late this summer.

Stree Magic (Black London series, book 1) by Caitlin Kittredge 6/5/9
To read more about this book, check out this post.
This was a really good introduction to a new uf series. I liked the female protagonist, Pete, but it was Jack, a junkie punk-rocker wash out who is also a sorcerror who was really a stand out for me.

|
The Invisible Ring (A Black Jewels Novel) by Anne Bishop 6/3/9 AUDIOBOOK
I had such a great time chatting with Amy about The Shadow Queen, that I decided to dive right in to The Invisible Ring. Jared and Lia’s story was suspenseful, dark, and romantic. I love Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels world, and this was an excellent addition to it.

|
The Private Patient (An Adam Dagliesh Mystery, book 14) by PD James 6/1/9 AUDIOBOOK
Another solid procedural, featuring the poet/detective Adam Dagliesh.
A patient at a private clinic is murdered, and it’s up to Dagliesh and his investigative team to figure out whodunit. This book also seems to be a turning point for Dagliesh, with the coming of his marriage and looking toward the future for what he will do once he is promoted out of his current position.
The audio production was excellent.

|
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 5/31/9 (YA) AUDIOBOOK
This was a great story! Katniss has been chosen to compete in a death-match competition with representatives throughout the land. This was edge of the seat suspense, and I can’t wait for book 2 in the series, Catching Fire.

The Shadow Queen (A Black Jewels Novel) by Anne Bishop 5/28/9
After my disappointment in Tangled Webs, last years Black Jewels Novel, I was really hoping for a return to some of the things I loved about The Black Jewels Trilogy. I mostly loved this book.
More soon on The Shadow Queen in an upcoming post!

|
Ravenous (The Dark Forgotten series, book 1) by Sharon Ashwood 5/27/9
A good beginning to a series. I liked the witch, Holly and Alessandro, a vampire. The world-building was good enough for a first book. There were a couple of uneven parts, and a big wtf moment for me but overall an enjoyable read.

|
|
This was a fun book, with a really good audiobook production.
Filmakers and sisters Sophie and Amy get their big break, filming a film short to help a B-actress revive her career. They return to the actress’ hometown of rural Temptation, OH. Sophie meets sexy mayor, Phin and romantic hi-jinx ensue.
While I wished that Sophie stood up to her pushy sister sooner, and Phin got over his resistance to love/commitment sooner, overall, it was an enjoyable book.

|
SheWolf by Teresa D’Amario 5/25/9 EBOOK Novella
This was a fun and sexy shifter story. Vet Anna knows she has a special connection to the animals she treats, but until wolven Kieran comes to town doesn’t know that there’s a secret in her past.
For the length of the novella (111 pp) it does a good job setting up the relationship between Anna and Kieran. Except for a really important thing that he keeps from her (I’m still not clear why) that really bugged me, I liked this story a lot, and hope that this might be the beginning of a series. ::fingers crossed::

|
Tomorrow (Hunters for Hire, book 1) by Samantha Kane 5/24/9
This sci-fi menage (m/m/f) romance is the first book in a new series. The characters, were Cerise (rebel princess,) Tie (bounty hunter,) and Regan (rebel leader and pirate.)
I totally bought the relationship in this novel. Sam Kane is great at showing the deep emotion between lovers. The world-building was a weak-point for me, and to be perfectly honest, I tended to skim some of it to get back to Cerise/Tie/Regan. However, if this it the beginning of a new series (I think it is) I will be back for more, and hopefully the world will gain depth as the series progresses.

|
Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, book 2) by JR Ward 5/22/9
I’ve decided the BDB is the Pringles of my series reading. The books won’t change the world, but the are so much damn fun to gobble up! Total junk-food reading and very satisfying.
This was Rhage’s story, and I loved Rhage’s emotional vulnerability. It totally got to me how he was actually more emotionally available than Mary Luce was. The reasons for her holding back made sense, and didn’t feel artificial just to create fake tension in the plot.
I can’t wait to read Z’s story!
- JR Ward’s site.
- Excerpt for Lover Eternal on author’s site.

|
Hard and Fast (Fast Track series, book 2) by Erin McCarthy 5/20/9
While Hard and Fast didn’t live up to my (unreasonably high) expectations that I got after reading book 1 in the series, Flat Out Sexy, it was still a fun read.
I liked Imogen and Ty, and their “opposites attract” romance. However, Imogen’s academic life was not convincing, and I had some issues with a conflict between them very late in the book. Maybe if the book had another 50 pages to convincingly resolve their issues, I’d have been happier with the book.

Miss Wonderful (The Carsington Brothers series, book 1) by Loretta Chase 5/15/9
I think Loretta Chase writes some of the smartest historical romances around. I really enjoy her books, and whenever I think I know what’s going to happen, I am wrong (that’s a good thing.)

To Beguile a Beast (The Legend of the Four Soldiers series, book 3) by Elizabeth Hoyt 5/10/9
To read more about this book, check out my post.
I’ve really come to look forward to EH’s books. This one had an interesting hero and heroine, who have both lived and been deeply impacted by their experiences by the time the book opens. While it wasn’t as good as book 2 in the series To Seduce a Sinner (one of my favorite historical reads of last year) it was still a very enjoyable book.

|
|
This is one of those books I kept hearing about, and was lucky enough to snag it at last week’s book swap mini SoCal blogger’s get together.
Niall, who had been through so much following the death of her son and collapse of her marriage, is jerked out of her frozen world by sexy playwright, Vic. Their no-holds-barred affair turns into something more, before either of the realize it. But both of them have to deal with their individual issues before they can have a future together.
This is a very hot, erotic romance, with lots of angst and some elements of bdsm (which is not really my thing, but in the context of the story, it worked.)

|
Mortal Sins (World of the Lupi, book 5) by Eileen Wilks 5/7/9
I was so glad to see this book was a return to Lily and Rule as the central characters. FBI Agent, Lily and Rule, a lupus (werewolf) are drawn into a case while visiting Rule’s son, Toby before a custody hearing. While this book is labeled “paranormal romance” it always feels more of an urban fantasy, with a lot of the series action focusing on Lily’s preternatural investigations.
I really like the world that Eileen Wilks has created over the course of the series, and though this book bogged down at times over some of the pretty detailed explanations of the kinds of magic present in this world, it was on the whole another strong installment of the series.

|
Not Quite a Lady (Carsington series, book 5) by Loretta Chase 5/5/9
I didn’t realize until I started this that it was the 5th book in a series, but I read on anyway.
I love Loretta Chase’s intelligent but incredibly human heroines. They are not perfect, they make mistakes, but it’s never through stupidity or pig-headedness.
More to come soon in a review!

|
Match Me if You Can (Chicago Stars series, book 6) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 5/4/9 AUDIOBOOK
I’m continuing my love affair with SEP. I’m even listening to these books totally out of order, just getting my hands on whatever I can, cause I’m enjoying her writing so much.
Matchmaker Annabelle is totally out of her league when she tries to find the perfect wife for hot-shot sports agent Heath. I just loved Annabelle, who really came across as a regular gal surrounded by ambitious over-achievers. She was likeable and funny, and even Heath who is sometimes arrogant and overbearing was fun to read about.

For a while I was burnt out on this series, but this one and To Sir Phillip, with Love (which I read last week) has made me again fall for Julia Quinn’s smart and entertaining writing.
For one night, Sophie, the illegitimate daughter of an Earl passes herself off as a member of the ton, and crashes a masquerade ball at the Bridgerton’s. There, she meets Benedict, and in Cinderella fashion, they fall for each other just before she needs to flee and return to her life as an impoverished lady’s maid to her step-sisters.
JQ breathes new life into this Cinderella story, and it was a really fun read.

Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling series, book 5) by Nalini Singh 5/1/9
Man, this is a great series. I really liked both Dorian and Ashaya, and the storyline was really suspenseful.
Picking up from book 4, Dorian has agreed to rescue Ashaya’s son from the Psys who are holding him to guarantee her cooperation in developing mind-control implants. HtP was a good balance between romance and action.

Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely series, book 1) by Melissa Marr 4/29/9
April Re-read Challenge Book:
To read more about this book, check out my post.
This is one of those books that is so meaty, that upon re-reading, I found myself noticing new things and seeing things I remembered in a new light. Because of this, Wicked Lovely was an extremely satisfying re-read.
Despite the danger Aislinn knows faeries represent (and Keenan, especially,) she is drawn to him. Her deeply ingrained instincts scream “run” yet despite herself she finds herself responding to his allure.
When she finally understands the ramifications of her relationship with the faeries, and Keenan in particular, I love how her solution is not just to accept her inescapable destiny, but to try to shape it. It really puts a twist on the typical HEA of a fairy tale.

Desire Unchained (Demonica series, book 2) by Larissa Ione 4/26/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. I won this from Amy’s Romance Book Wyrm.
I really got hooked into the story from the beginning. Runa is a great combination of strength and vulnerability. And, Shade is unique in that, while he’s all about the sex, he also has this nurturing quality that drives him to discover what a woman needs, and then fulfill it.
It’s great to see them come together despite themselves, and I especially liked Shade’s confrontations with his brothers over what to do with Runa. I’m really loving the continuing story line with Gem and Kynan, and I have a feeling that by the time I finish the 3rd book, Passion Unleashed, they will be my favorite couple.

Happy Ending (Smithfield series, book 2) by LB Gregg – (M/M) EBOOK Novella 4/24/9
To read more about this book, check out my post.
I won a copy of Happy Ending over at Lisabea’s Nose in a Book (LB’s personal book blog) and was so excited, since this was at the top of my tbb list.
Told in first person pov by Seth, this book was a quick, fun read. I loved hearing Seth’s thoughts and perspectives on things, and David was also a unique character.
The story was entertaining, with these two coming together amid the newness of Seth’s guardianship of his niece, the healing over the loss of his sister, and the reappearance of his ex-lover.

I’ve been in the mood for a historical romance, and this hit the spot. I loved how Eloise and Phillip come together through their letters, and also that he is not a smooth, sophisticated member of the ton.
Eloise is taken aback when she meets Phillip in person, and realizes that her imaginings about who he is are completely off the mark. He thinks he just wants a wife, any wife, to be the mother to his unruly children, and make his life run smoothly. Both of them have to learn that reality may not be what they expect, but is so much better than their assumptions.

Open Season by Linda Howard 4/23/9 AUDIOBOOK
Daisy wakes up on her 34th birthday, and decides that she needs to make some changes in her boring, uneventful life. When she does, things get more exciting than she hoped for.
I liked Daisy, for the most part (thoght, sometimes her naivté stretched belief a little) and Jack was a great alpha hero. This was a good solid romantic suspense tale. This was my first Linda Howard book, and I will look forward to reading/listening to more.

|
Swallowing Darkness (Merry Gentry series, book 7) by Laurell K Hamilton 4/22/9 AUDIOBOOK
To read more about this book, check out my post.
There is definitely a feeling that this series is coming to an ultimate conclusion. Merry and her men are pretty much a fixed group, now. The men are (mostly) accepting of each other, and tied together by their love and devotion to Merry and their unborn children. The struggle between the Seelie, Unseelie, and Merry’s group has never been more desperate.
Despite a love scene that felt tacked on, there was, plenty of battle action, which kept the book moving. So much happens in each book, yet with LKH’s writing style, it always happens in an extremely short period of time. Most books, if they were to take place over the course of 1 night would be excruciating to read. But, time flows so differently in these books, and LKH really makes it work.

Natural Born Charmer (Chicago Stars series, book 7) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 4/22/9
To read more about this book, check out my post.
Not to be redundant, but this was such a charming book.
As funny and light a book that this was, the characters also had enough depth and complexity to make it really satisfying. An unexpected bonus was, it turned out that few of the characters that I had just read about in What I Did for Love (my post here) were introduced in Natural Born Charmer.

Between books, I forget how much I really like this series!
Kitty and Ben go to Vegas to get married. While they’re there, they run afoul of some bounty hunters from Ben’s past, and a troupe of lycanthropic stage performers. The pacing is great, and I really love where Carrie Vaughn is taking this series. Can’t wait to read Kitty Raises Hell, which was released in February.

Bound to Please (Harlequin Blaze Historicals) by Hope Tarr 4/19/9
To read more about Bound to Please, check out my post here.
Tracy from Tracy’s Place was so sweet to send this to me!
Brianna, Laird of the clan MacLeod kidnaps Ewan, brother to a rival laird, and plans to make a baby with him to ensure her position as laird and tie their houses together.
This was a quick, satisfying read. Brianna and Ewan meet when they are teens, and have never gotten over their immediate connection. There was just enough clan intrigue to be interesting, but not to take away from their story. Their scenes together were steamy and enjoyable!

Reliquary (Pendergast series, book 2) by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child 4/11/9 AUDIOBOOK
I read this book years go and have been wanting to get back into the series. I love the character of Agent Pendergast, and the book was tightly plotted and suspenseful.
The story of the reptilian monster stalking the homeless in New York City who live underground, was absorbing.

|
The Courage to Love (Brothers in Arms series, book 1) by Samantha Kane 4/10/9
To read more about this book, check out my post.
Samantha Kane is quickly becoming my go-to author for steamy, emotion-filled reads.
This is not a romance where the protagonists’ journey is that of “do I or don’t I.” Instead, their journey is one of acceptance: Kate’s acceptance of Jason’s and Tony’s love despite societal pressures and her feelings of abandonment, and Jason’s and Tony’s acceptance of how the reality of having Kate in their lives changes their relationship to each other.

|
Handyman by Claire Thompson (M/M) 4/8/9
I first visited Claire Thompson’s website after she visited the DIK ladies, and have had this on my wish list ever since I read the excerpt. Will is a 30 year old successful Wall Street trader, on sabbatical and re-evaluating where his life is going. Jack is a 44 year old widower who enters Will’s life when he comes to renovate Will’s house.
I really loved how Will and Jack forged their relationship, and how Jack comes to a recognition and acceptance of who he really is. Will also grows through the relationship, learning to really love.
The emotions and chemistry between Will and Jack were wonderful to read. I’ll definitely be reading more Claire Thompson!

Frostbite (Vampire Academy series, book 2) by Richelle Mead (YA) 4/4/9 AUDIOBOOK
Dhampir Rose and her best friend, Moroi (vampire) princess, Lissa continue their adventures at St Vladimir’s Academy. The Moroi are under attack by the evil Strigoi, and the Moroi community, including Mason, Christian and Dimitri, take themselves to a remote mountain lodge. Adding to the tense atmosphere, is the appearance of Rose’s long absent mother, and Tasha, who is competition for the affections of Dimitri.
I really like where Richelle Mead is taking this series, and can’t wait to read or listen to book 3, Shadow Kiss.

|
Night’s Rose (Night’s Rose trilogy, book 1) by Annaliese Evans 4/4/9
I saw this over at AmyC’s Romance Book Wyrm (yes, she’s been my go-t0-girl lately for some great reads!)
The dark, sensual story loosely uses the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale as a starting point, and takes it to unexpected places that richly reward the reader. Rose is a fascinating character, emotionally scarred and exorcising the demons of her past by slaying ogres for the Fey de la Nuit.
She is drawn both to her Fey liason, Ambrose, and her vampire battle companion, Gareth. The sexual tension, the suspenseful battles, and Rose’s search to reveal details about her past make for great reading. I can’t wait for book 2, The Prince of Frogs, coming out in September.

There’s something about the way that Kristan Higgins writes that is just like a girlfriend is telling the reader about her mis-adventures in dating.
This was a fun, light read, and while it didn’t rock my world like Just One of the Guys did, last year, it was still very good. Grace is likeable, loves her family, and stuggles not to be the one everyone pities at the family get-togethers. Cal is someone who is trying to start over, and just wants to be left alone. Despite himself, he’s drawn to Grace, and when Grace stops worrying about everyone else, and focuses on herself for a change, she realizes what a great guy he is. A very satisfying read.

Wolf Signs by Vivan Arend 3/27/9 E-BOOK (Novella)
I saw this novella over at Amy C’s Romance Book Wyrm, and really liked the premise: Outdoorswoman Robyn, who is deaf, goes into the Yukon for a get-away, and runs into werewolf (and mate-to-be) Keil, who is getting his head together out in the wilderness, on the eve of a match for the position of pack Alpha. For me, this had the elements of an enjoyable paranormal: sexy weres, steamy chemistry between the protagonists, and a little bit of drama with pack politics. The format meant that things moved swiftly (it was under 130 pages.) At times things were resolved very conveniently (like Robyn’s brother, Tad’s acceptance of Robyn’s new mate) which of course was a necessity due to the brevity. On the whole, a good read, and I’d love to read more about the world Vivian Arend created in Wolf Signs. (Maybe a mate for Tad or Keil’s brother, TJ?)
ETA: Vivian Arend has said that Tad’s story will be told soon. Hooray!

This was a Kimani Romance category romance I downloaded free (scroll down, on right) from eHarlequin, in celebration of their 60th Anniversary. I haven’t read much category romance in the last few years, but this was one that intrigued me. Taylor is a career woman who has decided she wants a baby, but not a husband, or even a short-term lover who could provide one. She makes a business proposal to successful businessman, Dominic Saxon, whom she knows is also interested in children, but not romance. The plan is to go away for a “procreation vacation” to a beautiful Caribbean island for a week of baby-making. Of course, things become much more complicated than Taylor and Dominic bargain for when they both find themselves falling for the other, in direct contradiction to their agreement. While I missed a more meaty story (which is impossible in a 250 page category) Irresistible Forces was enjoyable and extremely sensual. I loved reading Dominic’s perspective, especially when it came to the love scenes. Overall, a satisfying read!

To read more about this book, check out my post.
This is the first book I’ve read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, which I won it from the wonderful ladies over at Book Binge. Despite the fact that I’m not usually that into reading stories about famous people, this story intrigued me, because it’s about actors whose big moment is past — their legendary sitcom ended 8 years before the book opens — and are trying to figure out “where do they go from here.” (Which is something I do like to read about.)
The book was wonderful and funny. I really grew to like Bram and Georgie over the course of the book. They grew throughout the story, which really made for interesting reading. I also loved the “ensemble case” feel of the secondary characters, especially Bram’s punky housekeeper, Chazz, Georgie’s dad, Paul, and Georgie’s agent, Linda. Read more about WIDfL on my post here.

Men of the Otherworld (Tales of the Otherworld, volume 1) by Kelley Armstrong 3/23/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. I can not say often enough how much I love Kelley Armstrong’s writing. Her confidence as a writer is so clear on every page. The Otherworld is so well imagined that it feels real with every page. I loved reading Clay’s and Jeremy’s stories. There were so many opportunities to gain insight to them that I don’t usually get in the regular series books. I’m looking forward to more of these glimpses into the male perspective of the Otherworld. I’m beyond thrilled that a Tales of the Otherworld, volume 2 will be released in 2010.

To read more about this book, check out my post. My book club reads are different from my usual book choices, but I’m usually glad I can expand my horizons a bit. This was one of those books that made me so glad I read it. This novel is about 93 year old Jacob who reminisces about the period of his life when he worked in a Depression-era circus. His story is colorful, exciting, and poignant. If you ever wanted to read about what it’s like to run away and join the circus, this is a wonderful tale.

Pleasure Unbound (Demonica series, book 1) by Larissa Ione 3/21/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. There’s been so much buzz about this series, and I’ve had it on my booklist for a while. I won book 2 in this series, Desire Unchained, over at Romance Book Wyrm, and Christine was sweet enough to send over book 1 for me to read. I’ll admit, it was a shaky start. I love kick-ass heroines, but lately I’ve been a little impatient with meeting new ones, including Tayla. Sometimes, it felt as if her issues and attitude got in the way of her seeing what was in front of her. (Namely, the hot, demon doctor, Eidolon.) However, by the middle of the book, she won me over, and I was really invested in her struggle to come to terms with the truth about who she is and who the people around her are. I’ll be looking forward to reading Shade’s story in book 2, and continue to explore Larissa Ione’s dark, sexy world.

Where the Heart Leads (First Volume in the Casebook of Barnaby Adair) by Stephanie Laurens 3/19/9 AUDIOBOOK
To read more about this book, check out my post. This is the first book in the Cynster-related series, the Casebook of Barnaby Adair. It was a good book, though it didn’t blow me away. The usual minor appearances of Cynster relations/friends were made though there was a definite feeling of a shift of focus. Penelope and Barnaby intrigued me when I met them in The Taste of Innocence. They were a great match, and the case that brought them together (the kidnapping of boys from the foundling house administrated by Penelope) was absorbing. The audiobook production was excellent, however, while narrator Simon Prebble was extremely talented, hearing him read the highly descriptive love scenes is more than a little disconcerting.

Mine to Possess (Psy-Changeling series, book 4) by Nalini Singh 3/13/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. While the series continues to be consistently strong, and it’s still one of my favorite paranormal romance series, this one didn’t quite “do it” for me like Slave to Sensation or Caressed by Ice. Mostly, I think it had to do with the hero, Clay, who was (true to the title of the book) a little too much of the “your mine” alpha-y sort. I like alpha heroes, but I kept getting a little put off when he kept holding her neck and talking about “mine.” Despite that, I thought Tally and Clay worked as a couple, I liked their backstory, and I liked the suspenseful kidnapping plot (they are trying to rescue a kidnapped youth that was in Tally’s charge). I’m looking forward to reading Hostage to Pleasure, and getting current with the series!

Scandal by Carolyn Jewel 3/11/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. The book takes place over 4 years, jumping fluidly back and forth between when Sophie and Banallt first meet — she is married to the dissolute Tommy, he is Tommy’s compatriot in whoring, drinking — and the present action — they are both widowed, she is penniless, living with her very protective brother, he is recently returned from an extended continental trip, and both are forever changed by their last meeting three years earlier. Again and again I was reminded of the same kind of pent up emotion that Persuasion and To Seduce a Sinner had, buried under social conventions and manners. And yet, when Sophie and Banallt do come together, it’s a conflagration. The love scenes were scorching and full of physical as well as emotional heat.

|
Deathwish (The Cal Leandros series, book 4) by Rob Thurman 3/10/9
To read more about this book, check out my post. The character development on this series gets better and better. Deathwish is split 1st person POV between half-Auphe Cal and his “Buddha-lovin’ bad-ass” human brother, Niko. I really like this style for Deathwish, and I don’t remember RT doing this in previous books (tho’ she may have, I have a brain like a sieve.) This is very effective in Deathwish, as we see both brothers struggle with their humanity while fighting Auphe and other preternatural nasties, and taking care of each other. Man, I love their relationship, and how they always have each other’s backs.

Angels’ Blood (A Guild Hunter Novel, book 1) by Nalini Singh 3/5/9
This first book in the series was everything I had hoped it would be. The world was fresh and original, and the angels, vampires and hunters were fascinating. I can really see why this series is being called and “urban fantasy romance” — it’s definitely grittier than paranormal romance, but still has more focus on relationships than a strict urban fantasy.

Angels’ Pawn (The Guild Hunter series, prequel ebook novella) by Nalini Singh 3/4/9 EBOOK
To read more about this book, check out my post. This is Nalini Singh’s ebook prequel novella to her new Guild Hunter series. Angels’ Blood is book 1 of the series, and was released yesterday. This was such a wonderful introduction to the series! The writing is lush and romantic, and the hunters, angels, and vampires are really interesting. The connection that hunter, Ashwini and vampire, Janvier have is palpable from the first page. This novella can be read as a stand alone, and is not necessary to read before starting Angels’ Blood.

When Twilight Burns (The Gardella Vampire Chronicles, book 4) by Colleen Gleason 3/3/9
Victoria, Sebastian and Max are back again. The mystery kept me guessing, and (joy!) the romance action progressed, with the V, S, and M triangle. I’m so glad I waited to read this one, so I don’t have to wait to read book 5, As Shadows Fade, which was released today!

Islands by Samantha Kane 3/1/9 (M/M) EBOOK
To read more about Islands, check out my post. I was intrigued by the Pacific during WWII setting, and Samantha Kane invokes enough war-time island color to make it feel authentic. This was one of the most lushly romantic stories I’ve read in a while. Frenchman René was unabashedly straight-forward in his desire for the American, Gabe. Their emotions were intense, the sex was sometimes raw, but always steeped in their feelings for each other. A wonderful, romantic book.

|
Black Ice (Ice series, book 1) by Anne Stuart 2/26/9
I don’t read much contemporary romantic suspense, but I was intrigued by the French setting of this book, and after reading Kelley Armstrong’s Made to Be Broken, assassin’s were still on my mind. Carolyn Jean’s review sealed the deal for me! It was a fast-paced, quick read, and while Chloe’s naive American girl sometimes made my eyes roll, I really enjoyed it. Mostly, because of Bastien. He’s a jaded, passionless assassin, wanting out of his “career”. Chloe shakes his world, and for the first time, he starts acting out of emotion, not cold reason. And, boy, hot doesn’t even begin to describe when they come together! While I enjoyed Black Ice, I don’t feel compelled to read the entire series. It doesn’t look like the books need to be read in order, and I’m really interested in books 3 & 4, Ice Blue and Fire & Ice, which take place in Japan. For some reason, these books seem like they would make great audiobooks, but it doesn’t look like there are any.

The Land of Night (Scarlet & the White Wolf trilogy, book 3) by Kirby Crow (M/M) 2/25/9
To read more about The Land of Night, check out my post. This is the last book of the trilogy, Scarlet & the White Wolf. The trilogy follows the adventures of Scarlet of Lysia, a down-to-earth young Hilurin peddlar, and the mysterious Liall. The third book takes place in Liall’s homeland of Rshan, amid court politics and intrigues. Because this is the last in the series, Liall’s and Scarlet’s relationship is well established, and The Land of Night is less focused on their coming together, and more focused on how they can build a future together, when neither has really yet learned to trust, and be completely honest with the other.

Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie (Book 2) by Holly Black (YA) AUDIOBOOK 2/24/9
To read more about Valiant, check out my post. (Scroll down.) Holly Black is unflinching in her depiction of homeless teens, drug use/abuse, sex, and violence. This is NOT a sparkly Stephenie Meyer vampire world. A lot of the time, while I sympathize with Val, I’m not even sure I like her very much. However, the story is compelling. Ravus is a wonderful character: hideous, noble, sympathetic. And despite it all, I do care about Val. The audiobook production is excellent. Renee Raudman’s narration is lively, and her voices distinct. With Holly Black’s prose, and Renee Raudman’s narration, there was a scene in the troll’s lair that gave me chills.

To read more about The Lost Duke of Wyndham, check out my post. I love Julia Quinn’s facility with dialogue. I was reading this at work yesterday (I have an occasional job where I can read while working) and I kept catching myself smiling like an idiot (at least probably to the people who saw me) while reading. Angsty heroes really get to me — I love em— but I wasn’t in the mood for heavy reading this weekend. TLDoW was a good balance of depth (Jack was a little angsty, without being morose and Grace was cheerful without being flighty) and froth. The word I keep thinking of to describe my reading experience of this book is “satisfying”.

Made to be Broken (Nadia Stafford series, book 2) by Kelley Armstrong 2/21/9
To read more about Made to be Broken, check out my post. I think of this series as Kelley Armstrong’s sleeper series. Her other excellent series’ make it easy to overlook this suspense series about hit woman, Nadia Stafford. Kelley Armstrong is such an accomplished writer and makes me empathize with Nadia (and dig Jack —even while his pronoun-less speech drives me a little batty) despite her morally questionable secret life. She wrestles with her own moral issues and examines what lines she’s willing to cross. Nadia’s investigation of her missing teenage employee is interesting, as well as the exploration of survivor-guilt around her cousin’s murder.

Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs 2/19/9
This was my most highly anticipated releases of the year. I will post more soon!

Emma by Jane Austen AUDIOBOOK 2/18/9 (RE-READ)
I haven’t read Emma in many years, but have recently seen the Gwynneth Paltrow movie, and the Kate Beckinsale BBC production. Quite honestly, while I really like this story—Emma’s and Mr. Knightly’s exchanges are wonderful, I can see where judicious movie editing (in both film productions) helped this story along. There were times when the story got bogged down in excessive detail. However, Emma’s missteps in matchmaking for her friends are as amusing as I remembered, and the book (as opposed to film) really allowed me to empathize with Emma, and see that her know-it-all tendencies were tempered by a real desire to see those around her happy. Her relationship with her father, especially, showed what a caring person she was. |
Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson series, book 3) by Patricia Briggs 2/17/9 (RE-READ)
This is my favorite book in the series. There is so much going on here, with the plot and with the characters, and with the bigger story arc of the series. Eventhough I knew what was going to happen in this book, I still felt the immediacy of the action, and at times read with a lump in my throat, or a grin on my face. On to Bone Crossed!

|
Blood Bound (Mercy Thompson series, book 2) by Patricia Briggs 2/15/9 (RE-READ)
To read more about Blood Bound check out my post. (Scroll down.) Still enjoying re-reading this series, though honestly, I’m feeling a bit impatient, now that Bone Crossed (book 4) is on my shelf. The story itself, though, is a really good read. The vampire plotline is absorbing and there are some parts that are really chilling. I’m enjoying taking a second look, too, at the Adam/Mercy/Samuel situation, seeing things with better informed (knowing what happens in Iron Kissed) eyes. Also, I forgot how much I liked and sympathized with the vampire, Stephan. I’m looking forward to his appearance in Bone Crossed.

To read more about Instant Attraction, check out my post. I’d heard so much buzz about this book, that I was worried that I’d be disappointed. However, I really enjoyed this contemporary romance. I think what I liked best about this book is that the way Cam and Katie related to each other felt real. Sometimes, she would tell him something, and it really felt authentic and straight-forward. I could imagine hearing (or saying) that in a real conversation. There wasn’t a lot of “will they/won’t they”, the drama focused more on Cam’s and Katie’s individual issues, which was really interesting and made for a great read!

Driven by Eve Kenin 2/12/9
This book had so much good about it but I had one REALLY big issue that makes me doubtful I’ll read the next in the series. The good stuff: the post apocalyptic world was original and interesting; the action was interesting and fast-paced; and, Wizard was a great hero (he reminded me a lot of Judd in Nalini Singh’s Caressed by Ice—a man who had not been allowed/taught to feel or express emotion, yet it’s there, just under the surface). Unfortunately, for about the first 2/3’s of the book, I wasn’t feeling the connection between Raina and Wizard. There was a lot of talk about how they felt connected to each other, but not enough time (IMO) was spent with them actually being together when they weren’t getting shot at. Maybe I’m reading too much romance?

2009 TBR Challenge-February
The Leopard Prince (The Princes trilogy, book 2) by Elizabeth Hoyt 2/12/9 EBOOK
This is my Feburary book for the 2009 TBR Challenge. You can read my post here. I’m really glad I went back and read this book that I had started (and put down unfinished) last year. George (the heroine) and Harry had great chemistry, and this was an action packed plot.

Mexican Heat (Crimes and Cocktails series, book 1) by Josh Lanyon & Laura Baumbach 2/11/9 M/M EBOOK
Won over at Reviews by Jessewave. This was a great read! The connection between undercover cop Gabriel and Antonio, a lieutenant for a drug lord, was scorching. The opening in the nightclub sizzled on the pages. But, what made this book a stand-out was that it also was an absorbing crime novel. The twists and turns surrounding Gabriel’s undercover work were suspenseful and compelling. The latter part of the book, which had a very different action, more focused on the relationship development and the characters, was equally compelling. I can’t wait for Tequila Sunrise, book 2 in the Crimes and Cocktails series.

Gobsmacked by by LB Gregg 2/10/9 M/M EBOOK
I’ve been very excited about LB’s new book, and I wasn’t disappointed. I bought the ebook when it became available on Friday, and after reading the opening chapter, it “jumped to the head of the line”, becoming my main read, ahead of the other books I had already started. I really enjoyed Mark and Tony’s story. Mark’s character and circumstances sucked me in immediately. The book opens with Mark accosting his lover during Ash Wednesday mass, after discovering him in bed that morning with their landlord. From there, the action doesn’t stop, as Mark goes on a journey to discover the extent of Jamie’s betrayal, take a stand for himself, and take a risk on Tony. A fun, fast-paced read!

|
The Serpent Prince (The Princes trilogy, book 3) by Elizabeth Hoyt 2/6/9
This is the last in the Princes trilogy, and it ended on a good note! Lucy, the practical, down-to-earth country miss was a great foil to rakish, clotheshorse Simon. I loved how she brought out depths to him that he tries to hide. Also, his pursuit of his brothers killers made for an interesting source of conflict for them. I usually don’t like revenge plots, but for some reason, this one worked for me.

Ginn Hale’s beautiful prose made this book so captivating, despite the gritty, harsh world she’s built. Wicked Gentlemen is two novellas that revolve around Belimai Sykes a Prodigal (a descendant of demons) and William Harper, and Inquisitor (a police officer/priest). I loved this small book (216 pp) for the wonderful stories, the beautiful cover, and even the quality of paper on which the book was printed. It’s a gem of a book.

I was worried I had read/heard so much hype about this one, that I’d be disappointed. I wasn’t. I loved Jess. She was such an original character: confident, unconventional, and funny. And, as I’ve said before, I love a tortured hero, and Dain is surely that. While at times I wanted to shake him out of his pity party, his growth and journey to accepting himself and Jess’ love made for a great read.

Red (Dead World series, book 1) by Jordan Summers 1/30/9
As much as I write about not wanting to pigeon-hole books too much by genre, this book had me scratching my head. At the outset, it had all the elements of urban fantasy: dark world view, kick-ass heroine, even the Chris McGrath book cover. But then, paranormal romance conventions kept startling me: the heavy “instant” attraction of the protags, the more graphic sexuality. In some ways, I liked that: I like to be challenged by what I read; however, mostly, it kept pulling me out of the book. The story itself, while a really interesting world and premise, fell short for me. There was a big lead up to the final showdown, but the dénouement seemed rushed, and the HEA (sort of) for the h/h felt too easy. All her angst and fear of commitment sort of evaporated at the end, rather than being dealt with.

Dead to the World (Southern Vampire series, book 4) by Charlaine Harris AUDIOBOOK 1/29/9
I’m continuing my revisit with Sookie. I’m working my way through the audiobooks. They’re excellent productions, narrated by Johanna Parker. Dead to the World is my favorite of the series. Eric totally steals the show on this one!

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments trilogy, book 2) by Cassandra Clare (YA) AUDIOBOOK 1/27/9
I had my issues with this book, but it redeemed itself enough in the end, that I will listen to the conclusion of this trilogy, City of Glass. I like Clary and Jace, and some of my earlier complaints were resolved over the course of the book.

|
Havemercy by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett 1/27/9
It started off a little slowly, but once it got going, I really loved it! Split between 4 perspectives, the voices were distinct, but came together to tell what in the end, was a single story. It was unexpectedly romantic. The relationship between young tutor Hal and Royston, a magician, was sweet, poignant at times, and satisfying. Thom’s and Rook’s story line, centering around the Dragon Corps, was very different. Combative and sometimes painful to read, but in the end made so much sense. The backdrop of the war, the city of Thremedon, and the magic-fueled dragons was colorful and interesting.

|
Caressed by Ice (Psy-Changeling series, book 3) by Nalini Singh 1/25/9
Another great installment of the Psy-Changeling series. Nalini Singh did a great job with Judd’s character, a Psy, able to balance his controlled icy demeanor with the explosive passion he feels for wolf Changeling, Brenna. Brenna’s character was really interesting, as well. Following her on her road to wholeness after her experiences at the hands of a Psy sociopath.

I really like Perry and Nick. The story is told in 3rd person, following both characters closely. This allows the reader to see each character through the other’s eyes, and lends much to the insight on both of them. Perry is shy, and newly-heartbroken. What I like about him is that while reticent, and even sometimes timid, he isn’t a wimp: he has a spark of initiative and strength. Nick is the strong silent type, and a bit of a mystery. This is very much a murder mystery with “ghost-y” elements. Josh Lanyon is great at plotting mystery (I tend to forget that when I think of the Adrien English Mysteries, ’cause I get so caught up with Adrien’s and Jake’s relationship.) It was nicely balanced between the romance and the mystery.

2009 TBR Challenge-January Fantasy Lover (Dark Hunter series, book 1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon 1/20/9
This book is part of the 2009 TBR Challenge. Read more about it at here. Fantasy Lover has a rough start for me. The story line—Greek male love-slave trapped in an ancient book, freed by “average” woman whose still getting over past heartbreak —was a bit cheesy for me, but I wanted to read the first book in the series, since I has already read book 8 and liked it. I didn’t really like the narrative style, but it settled down after about the first third of the book. In the end, I was glad I read it, mostly because of the sweet relationship that developed between the hero & heroine over the course of the book.

Club Dead (Southern Vampire series, book 3) by Charlaine Harris. AUDIOBOOK 1/16/9
I’ve read this book before, and am slowly working my way through the series a second time, completely in audiobook format. It’s a great audio production, so I’m enjoying it immensely! I had forgotten how much I liked Alcide in this book. I love how Sookie has to increasingly examine the moral consequences of what unfolds around her and think about how these things change who she is.

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy series, book 1) by Richelle Mead. (YA) AUDIOBOOK 1/14/9
I had high exceptations, since I really like RM’s Succubus series, and she delivered! I love the relationship between Rose and Lissa. They really take care of each other. And Dimitri was awesome! I’m trying to decide if I’m going to listen to or read Frostbite, book 2 in the series. The audiobook production, narrated by Stephanie Wolf was really great!

Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson series, book 1) by Patricia Briggs 2009 Re-read Challenge book. 1/12/9
This book is part of the 2009 Re-read Challenge. My review is posted here. In a nutshell, this was a great re-read! It really stood up to the test. Mercy’s character was as enjoyable as the first time, and I really noticed this time how well plotted it is.

|
Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, book 1) by JR Ward 1/9/9
I was a little surprised at how fast Beth’s and Wrath’s first encounter moves, but by the second time they meet, I was totally caught up in it. I loved Wrath’s emotional vulnerability to Beth. His strength and fierceness makes this really affecting to read. I also enjoyed the camaraderie of the Brothers. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of this series!

Based on a Grimm fairy tale, Maid Maleen: When Dashti, a maid, and Lady Saren, her mistress, are shut in a tower for seven years because of Saren’s refusal to marry a man she despises, the two prepare for a very long and dark imprisonment. (from author’s site) Of course, this is only a part of the tale! Dashti’s story is captivating, and the world SH has created is magical and exotic. In a lot of ways it reminds me of Poison Study by Maria Snyder, but maybe aimed at a slightly younger audience. I’ll be recommending it to my 13 year old niece! This is an excellent fairy tale.

Kael’s dv survivor story caught my attention. I’m also a sucker for dragon stories. In a lot of ways the book really worked for me, especially the characterizations of Kael and Hugh. What didn’t work for me was the “instant love” between them. Kael and Hugh know each other as boss/employee for some time before the book starts, but the “love you no-matter-what” came way too soon for me. Also, the book suffers from “kitchen sink” condition. There were: dragons, sea serpents, St George (which I get, cause of the whole dragon-slaying thing), Mordred (an elf), Gaia, mermaids, talking pets, and telepathy. Finally, it had one of the most abrupt endings I’ve ever read. After the lead up to the big confrontation, the conclusion was shockingly short.

Mariner’s Luck (Scarlet & the White Wolf series, book 2) by Kirby Crow (M/M) EBOOK 1/1/9
I’m really enjoying the further adventures of Scarlet and Liall. Kirby Crow has built such a wonderful tension (UST) between them in book 1 and it really pays off in the relationship between them, in book 2. The only thing is, is that the individual books really feel like parts to a single story. I’ll definitely read the conclusion to this trilogy, Land of Night very soon.
