When I was in junior high, my dad grounded me from the library until I read The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico by Bernal Díaz del Castillo. (He was really into “learning about my culture” and knew how to get me to cooperate.) Books have always been a big part of my life.
I’m a reader. Not a writer. At least not a creative writer. I have SO MUCH respect for those who can create in this way. When I had to declare my college major, there was no doubt it would be Literature-Critical Writing (my only second choice would have been History.) I love connecting with people around books, something I don’t get to do too much in person. The most notable exception to this, though, is my husband. I met him at UC Irvine (Zot!) in a Hispanics in the US lit class. We’re both big book geeks. We have an on-going struggle to find new places for bookshelves.
Our house is what I think of as my southern Californian dream. A Latino/Chinese-Jamaican/American household. We’ve got a 5 year old son who rides herd over our 100 pound black lab. I have a small vegetable garden that grows lots of peppers (Mexican and Jamaican, of course!), squash, berries, and whatever else I can fit in and amongst my roses and fruit trees in my teeny tiny yard. I love ebooks and audio books that I can read/listen to while I knit, cook or drive. I’m excited about this blog. I like the idea of having an online version of my lists, which I make and keep up compulsively. I also have fallen in love with the online book community. Please be sure to check out the sidebar for some of my favorite book blogs/sites and authors.

Hi Renee!
This is my first time visiting your blog and I love it! You’ve got great taste in authors and books, and I love your blogging “voice.”
I enjoyed reading this post and seeing a picture of you and your guys. You have a beautiful blended family–I love the mix of ethnicities! My family is also blended, although not as diverse as yours. We’re a Filipino German-American family.
Your home and garden sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing!
Christine: Thanks so much for the kind words! I’m really enjoying writing about what I love. Hope you visit often.
Hi lass
I don’t think we’ve met, but my WordPress stats said you’d linked to my site, so here I came here, and here I am on the sidebar – thank you, Kind One
I’ll return the favour soon (I have lunch to eat now).
Thanks for everything, and have a lovely day!

I never happened on this page, Renee! What a lovely family! How great to see you and this bio!!!
Carolyn Jean: Thanks!
lol. Actually, it was listed up in the header (as a tab) at one time, but thru the wonders of the html gods (or more likely some boneheaded thing I did), it disappeared from the tabs. I didn’t notice till a week or 2 ago, and added the link in the sidebar.
Am I missing it? I can’t find your email on your blog.
