April 2009 New Releases

April 2, 2009 at 6:00 am 10 comments

The size of my upcoming releases list has become a little overwhelming, so I’ve decided to change how I do this monthly post. I’ll highlight a few of the month’s upcoming releases, and include links to the rest. Wish I had time to write up all of them! <g>

Here are April’s releases:

April 6, 2009: A Madness of Angels: Or, The Resurrection of Matthew Swift (Matthew Swift series, book 1) by Kate Griffin

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

For Matthew Swift, today is not like any other day. It is the day on which he returns to life.

Two years after his untimely death, Matthew Swift finds himself breathing once again, lying in bed in his London home. Except that it’s no longer his bed, or his home. And the last time this sorcerer was seen alive, an unknown assailant had gouged a hole so deep in his chest that his death was irrefutable…despite his body never being found. He doesn’t have long to mull over his resurrection though, or the changes that have been wrought upon him. His only concern now is vengeance. Vengeance upon his monstrous killer and vengeance upon the one who brought him back.

A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin
I saw this over at Orbit’s Spring/Summer ’09 Publication Schedule, and was intrigued by the premise.

Kate Griffin is a new-to-me author, and while I’m trying not to start new series’ right now, I might just give this one a try.

April 7, 2009: Corambis (The Doctrine of Labyrinths series, book 4) by Sarah Monette

Here is a book description from the publisher’s site:

Exiled from Mélusine for the crime of heresy, the once powerful Cabaline wizard Felix Harrowgate and his half-brother Mildmay, former cat-burglar and assassin, journey to Corambis to face judgment from a ruling body of wizards. Corambis, however, is a land plagued by civil strife. Kay Brightmore, the Margrave of Rothmarlin, is part of an insurrection to restore the monarchy in the southern half of the country. In desperation, Kay and his rebels seek out the engine of Summerdown, an ancient magical device rumored to have terrible powers. Once the engine is awakened, only a powerful wizard can stop its awesome potential for destruction. Felix and Mildmay arrive just in time for their greatest challenge—and ultimate destiny…

Corambis by Sarah Monette
This is the conclusion to the dark, original  series.  I can’t say enough how much I love this series. It was one of my best reads of 2008. I’m sad to see it end, but also eager to see what Sarah Monette has in store next for readers.

April 7, 2009: Turn Coat (The Dresden Files, book 11) by Jim Butcher

Here is the description from the author’s site:

The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council — and there’s only one, final punishment for that crime. He’s on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden.

Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head–someone like Harry.

Turn Coat by Jim Butcher
Harry Dresden is back, and this time he’s saving Morgan’s butt. I haven’t yet read a bad book in this series, and I can’t wait to read this new one. (It’s already on request at the library.)

April 21, 2009: Fragile Eternity (Wicked Lovely sequel) by Melissa Marr (YA)

Here is the description from the publisher’s site:

Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone — but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he’d ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.

Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who’d always terrified her — but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she’d ever imagined.

In Melissa Marr’s third mesmerizing tale of Faerie, Seth and Aislinn struggle to stay true to themselves and each other in a milieu of shadowy rules and shifting allegiances, where old friends become new enemies and one wrong move could plunge the Earth into chaos.

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr
This is such a complex story and world, that I will definitely be giving the Wicked Lovely audiobook a re-listen before I read this one. Melissa Marr doesn’t hold back with the world she builds or the characters she creates.

April 28, 2009: To Beguile a Beast (Legend of the Four Soldiers series, book 3) by Elizabeth Hoyt.

Here is a book description from the author’s site:

CAN A WOUNDED BEAST . . .
Reclusive Sir Alistair Munroe has hidden in his castle ever since returning from the Colonies, scarred inside and out. But when a mysterious beauty arrives at his door, the passions he’s kept suppressed for years begin to awaken.

TRUST A BEAUTY WITH A PAST . . .
Running from past mistakes has taken legendary beauty Helen Fitzwilliam from the luxury of the ton to a crumbling Scottish castle . . . and a job as a housekeeper. Yet Helen is determined to start a new life and she won’t let dust-or a beast of a man-scare her away.

TO TAME HIS MOST SECRET DESIRES?
Beneath Helen’s beautiful façade, Alistair finds a courageous and sensual woman. A woman who doesn’t back away from his surliness-or his scars. But just as he begins to believe in true love, Helen’s secret past threatens to tear them apart. Now both Beast and Beauty must fight for the one thing neither believed they could ever find — a happy ever after.

To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt
Book 2 in this series, Seduced by a Sinner, is one of my favorite historicals. I love that book 3 is informed by the fairy tale, “Beauty and the Beast.”

    🙂

Thanks for thinking of me Renee! I’ve changed the title from Happy Ending’s’ to Happy Ending. Just last night. It made more sense, so I’m scrambling trying to update everything. Ack!

That Hoyt cover is the PERFECT shade of blue. I love it. And I’m a sucker for a Beauty and the Beast stories– it’s a must read.

Wow, thanks for the info. The Madness of Angels does sound cool, and now that I’ve been thinking of titles, I daresay, that is a fine one!!!!

That first book you have listed, the hero’s name is the exact same as the hero in Lisa Kleypas’ Scandal In Spring. Yeah, it’s sad I even know that, lol. But Matthew happened to be my favorite Wallflower hero–that’s the ONLY reason I remember, lol.

I’m really looking forward to Hoyt’s release. The story sounds great.

I know I’m stuck in my love of historical romances. I do love certain paranormals and contemps but I always fall back to the historicals, I don’t know what it is. I even say to myself that I need to broaden my reading horizon, but nope. Those darn historicals keep sucking me back in. Sigh…

    Thanks for the list!!

Lots of good books coming out this month, right Renee? 🙂

I was wondering, would you be interested to buddy review Turn Coat with me once you’ve read it? 🙂

lisabea: I’m looking forward to it! I’ll fix the title today. 🙂 Isn’t it funny how 1 change can lead to so much running around (I deal with that kind of site stuff irl, and there’s always 1 somewhere that gets by me. ;-P

Hoyt always has such sumptuous covers. A pretty dress always gets me.

CJ: Yes, very cool title. In fact, her 2nd book has already been announced, and the title and cover are just as cool. I like how they do that subtitle, too. Very different.

Barbara: So observant! I suck at remembering names, and always have to run and look things up. lol

Speaking of historicals, that Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie looks really good, too. There’s a really generous excerpt on the author’s site that’s worth checking out!

Nath: Turn Coat sounds great! I’ll drop you an email to follow up. 🙂

    Barbara: Right on!

Brie: Thanks! I never finished The Queen’s Bastard. I could tell it was a good book, but a little heavier than what I was in the mood for at that moment. I’ve got to get back to it!

Renee, you are so not helping my TBR list dilemma 🙂 The Madness of Angels sounds interesting, and both Fragile Eternity and Corambis are must-reads! (I’m currently halfway through The Virtu and loving it. Sarah Monette doesn’t write fast reads, but they are gripping!)

Speaking of historicals, that Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie looks really good, too. There’s a really generous excerpt on the author’s site that’s worth checking out!

I read Kristie’s review of this and though….ohhhh! So will have to check the excerpt out 🙂

orannia: Glad you’re enjoying The Virtu. I’m really eager to see how she end’s the series! She’s got some interesting posts right now, trying to figure out what she’s going to do after. Ace (her publisher) hasn’t offered her another contract. (Sob!) She’s also gotten some reviewer flack about the way she writes her series.
It was the excerpt that really got me for Madness. And then, reading that post of Kristies, yesterday! Can’t wait! 🙂
