April’s Reads

This month flew by, and I’m (again) changing the way I’m doing things around here. Below are all the books that I read in April with my mini-reviews on the month’s standouts.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa MarrWicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely series, book 1) by Melissa Marr 4/29/9

April Re-read Challenge Book:

Awesome book! I’m not bothering with a mini-review here, since it was a re-read.

Happy Ending by LB GreggHappy Ending (Smithfield series, book 2) by LB Gregg – (M/M) EBOOK Novella 4/24/9

To read more about this book, check out my post.

Told in first person pov by Seth, this book was a quick, fun read. I loved hearing Seth’s thoughts and perspectives on things, and David was also a unique character. The story was entertaining, with these two coming together amid the newness of Seth’s guardianship of his niece, the healing over the loss of his sister, and the reappearance of his ex-lover.

To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia QuinnTo Sir Phillip, With Love (Bridgerton series, book 5) by Julia Quinn 4/24/9

I’ve been in the mood for a historical romance, and this hit the spot. I loved how Eloise and Phillip come together through their letters, and also that he is not a smooth, sophisticated member of the ton.

Eloise is taken aback when she meets Phillip in person, and realizes that her imaginings about who he is are completely off the mark. He thinks he just wants a wife, any wife, to be the mother to his unruly children, and make his life run smoothly. Both of them have to learn that reality may not be what they expect, but is so much better than their assumptions.

Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Natural Born Charmer (Chicago Stars series, book 7) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 4/22/9

To read more about this book, check out my post.

As funny and light a book that this was, the characters also had enough depth and complexity to make it really satisfying. An unexpected bonus was, it turned out that few of the characters that I had just read about in What I Did for Love (my post here) were introduced in Natural Born Charmer.

Blue Diablo by Ann AguirreBlue Diablo (Corine Solomon series, book 1) by Ann Aguirre 4/12/9

To read more about Blue Diablo, check out my post here.

This is a new, original addition to the urban fantasy genre. Both Corine and Chance are unique characters, and the world they live in is original and interesting. I’m really looking forward to more from this series, and can’t wait for book 2.

The Courage to Love by Samantha KaneThe Courage to Love (Brothers in Arms series, book 1) by Samantha Kane 4/10/9

To read more about this book, check out my post.

Samantha Kane is quickly becoming my go-to author for steamy, emotion-filled reads.

This is not a romance where the protagonists’ journey is that of “do I or don’t I.” Instead, their journey is one of acceptance: Kate’s acceptance of Jason’s and Tony’s love despite societal pressures and her feelings of abandonment, and Jason’s and Tony’s acceptance of how the reality of having Kate in their lives changes their relationship to each other.

Handyman by Claire ThompsonHandyman by Claire Thompson (M/M) 4/8/9

Will is a 30 year old successful Wall Street trader, on sabbatical and re-evaluating where his life is going. Jack is a 44 year old widower who enters Will’s life when he comes to renovate Will’s house.

I really loved how Will and Jack forged their relationship, and how Jack comes to a recognition and acceptance of who he really is. Will also grows through the relationship, learning to really love. The emotions and chemistry between Will and Jack were wonderful to read.

Magic Strikes by Ilona AndrewsMagic Strikes (Kate Daniels series, book 3) by Ilona Andrews 4/7/9

I haven’t gotten around to writing a review for this one, but it was great! This series just keeps getting better and better.

Night's Rose by Annaliese EvansNight’s Rose (Night’s Rose trilogy, book 1) by Annaliese Evans 4/4/9

The dark, sensual story loosely uses the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale as a starting point, and takes it to unexpected places that richly reward the reader. Rose is a fascinating character, emotionally scarred and exorcising the demons of her past by slaying ogres for the Fey de la Nuit.

She is drawn both to her Fey liason, Ambrose, and her vampire battle companion, Gareth. The sexual tension, the suspenseful battles, and Rose’s search to reveal details about her past make for great reading. I can’t wait for book 2, The Prince of Frogs, coming out in September.

Phew! OK, so seeing it in 1 post like this is a little much. Since this is a new thing I’m trying, could I get a little feedback letting me know if this is worth posting, or if it’s just more convenient (for those who are interested) to visit my Read in 2009 page? (Which is basically the same info, but for the entire year, rather than monthly.)  Thanks! 🙂

Or, is the just a really scary testament to my book obsession? <g>

I think it’s great to see it all in one place! You read a bunch of great books this month. I can’t wait to start Blue Diablo!

I love reading what you’ve read this past month. Keep up the good work! 🙂 I’ve read a bunch of those but there were a few I hadn’t had a chance to read yet!

To Sir Phillip was my least favorite of all the Bridgertons. I just couldn’t get into that one. Loved Natural Born Charmer and Bound to Please. I thought Too Good to be True might be a bit Chick-Litty for me, but it wasn’t at all. That’s what I get for stereotyping covers. I liked it.

Great roundup. I should get off my ass and do one, LOL.

Renee, I like them all like this. It shows the variety that you’re reading, and I like that you post to past links (if we’ve missed any) or other links.

Which of the past month’s reads was your favorite?

You are such a prolific reader! I like this roundup. It lets me be reminded of what you felt about various books, and if I meant to take action on one and then forgot (ie buy one) it reminds me.

Tracy: Déja vu! lol. Just got home (I wound up spending another hour at Borders.) Blue Diablo was so good!

RachieG: Thanks! Hope you see something new to try. 🙂

Lori: I’m a total sucker for the letter writing thing, so Sir Phillip worked for me. Oh man, SEP is my new discovery, I can tell I’m going to blow thru her backlist. I do this anyway, but it’s sort of hidden away on a separate page.

Kati: Ack. So hard to pick one, but I guess I’d say Natural Born Charmer, just for it’s sheer enjoyability. Oh, I’m glad this works for you. I’ve been stressing about the length of this post.

    Li: Cool! 🙂

CJ: Yeah, it’s sort of scary for me to see it in one place like this. 😛 Just doing my job to add to your tbr pile. *g*

EH: Thanks! May has already started out good with Hostage to Pleasure by Nalini Singh.

I echo what everyone else has said – I really like the new format. Everything in one place, and with links so we can investigate 🙂

Sea Swept was the first ever Nora Roberts book I read, and I just love Cam!

I read a couple of those. Did you know that Bound To Please started with me? When you said Tracy sent it to you, then I knew! So neat to see it being passed around, and it just happened.

You got alot read in April!

orannia: thanks for the feedback! I was really worried that this might be too much. I’ll be doing a review over at Bridget’s place really soon on it!

AmyC: Oh cool! I saw that it made the rounds but I don’t think I put 2 and 2 together. It sounds like it’ll be visiting a few more places, too! Thanks for starting it on its trip. 🙂

Rosie: lol. Linking everything like that is a hold over from my day job. If there’s a like to put in, it’s really hard for me to ignore it. I just finished Match Me if You Can, today! I loved it!
We missed you! Hope we can do it again, soon.

Can’t wait to read your review of Magic Strikes either! 🙂 Glad you liked it 🙂 It’s true that out of the three, it was the best. Wonder if we’ll get to see the dinner between Kate and Curran in book #4… hmmm.

i’ll try to get the review for Turn Coat as soon as possible! 🙂

nath: Sea Swept was Bridget’s recommendation, since I’m sort of lukewarm on NR. Will be reviewing it really soon!
lol. Yes, I hope we get to read about Kate’s and Curran’s dinner. 😛 This series just gets better and better!
Looking forward to seeing the review. 🙂
