Smart Chicks Kick It in So Cal [Recap and GIVEAWAY]

September 25, 2010 at 8:12 am 22 comments

The book tour highlight of my year, the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour, came to town last week. Smart Chicks Tour-1 Contemporary Fantasy YA authors Kelley Armstrong (Otherworld and Darkest Powers series) and Melissa Marr (Wicked Lovely novels) organized a cross-country multi-city/multi-author extravaganza that landed in Pasadena, California on Monday.

Originally, I was going to take my niece, who is a big Melissa de la Cruz (Blue Bloods series) fan, but high school commitments prevented her from joining me. So, I set out on my own for Vroman’s, Pasadena’s awesome independent bookstore. The venue was great, with the event taking place in an outside courtyard area. I got lucky, and after some initial bouncing around, I actually found myself in the front row.

There was definitely a “rock concert” feel, with much excitement and screaming. (Hey, it was a YA event with a mostly teen-aged female crowd.) It was really cool to see so many authors take the stage together. For Monday’s date, in addition to Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr, the authors were:

Smart Chicks Tour-3Because of the large number of authors, the main event didn’t include any readings or any questions focused on a single author. Instead, there were “round-robin” questions, including: Who would you marry/shag (or kiss)/throw off of a cliff; favorite book (Kelley Armstrong went with Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot), last movie seen (Melissa Marr and Mary Pearson had seen Inception). There were also drawings, including a basket containing a book from every author who has participated in the tour, and a trivia contest where one VERY lucky attendee won an arc of Melissa Marr’s January release, Darkest Mercy, the last in her Wicked Lovely series.

A few interesting tidbits revealed on Monday included:

  • Melissa de la Cruz has an upcoming adult series. (I really enjoyed the first book in the Blue Bloods series and will definitely be keeping my eye out for this new series!)
  • Rachel Caine will have a new UF series, The Revivalists, coming out August 2011. (While I still read her YA series, I’ve drifted away from the adult Weather Wardens series, and am looking forward to this new series.)
  • Mary Pearson’s book The Adoration of Jenna Fox will be made into a movie.
  • Melissa Marr’s adult book, Graveminder will be released July 2011.
  • Melissa Marr’s book Wicked Lovely, which is being made into a movie, has a completed script and she has been asked for casting suggestions.
  • Kelley Armstrong’s YA series has been extended through book 9. (W00T! LOVED the first trilogy, The Darkest Powers and to my mind Kelley Armstrong is one of the strongest writers currently out there.)

Smart Chicks Tour-2After swag was thrown (see Melissa Marr-foreground, Melissa de la Cruz-background in picture on right), we lined up for the book signing. Chatting with other fans passed the time, and before I knew it, we were at the author tables, able to chat, pick up book marks and get our books signed. (Unfortunately, my camera is still in a box somewhere in my half-unpacked house, and my phone battery died before I made it to the signing portion of the evening, so no pictures of the signing. 😦 )

One of the most interesting items that came up at Monday’s event was that the participating authors are financing this tour with expected proceeds from an anthology they are all contributing to called Enthralled, to be released Fall 2011.

It was really great to see the camaraderie among the authors and how much they genuinely enjoyed each others’ books. After meeting the authors and talking with their fans, I’m really excited to crack open Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Magaret Stohl, and have (finally!) started listening to Carpe Corpus, book 6 in Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series, which has been sitting on my tbr for a while.

AND, ON TO THE GIVEAWAY!

Smart Chicks Tour flier

Sorry about the crappy quality of the picture. I still can’t find my camera, and my poor old Palm Centro is just not equal to quality picture taking.

To celebrate these awesome women, I am giving away a flier from the event, signed by all the authors, as well as a $10 gift certificate to the bookstore of your choice: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Book Depository, which will (hopefully!) be used to try one of these awesome authors’ books. Just leave a comment telling me which of these authors you’d love to read. This contest is open internationally.

Leave your comment by 11:59 p.m. (Pacific time) Tuesday, September 28, 2010 to be entered. Winner will be posted Wednesday, September 29.

I’m not entering – just had to stop by and say hi. Sounds like a great event!

    • 2. Renee  |  September 25, 2010 at 8:53 am

Hey, Chris! Gonna head over today and get myself some linkity! 🙂

  • 3. Carolyn Crane  |  September 25, 2010 at 8:48 am

I’m not entering either, but thanks for the report! And, were they actually throwing books?

    • 4. Renee  |  September 25, 2010 at 8:56 am

lol. No, not books. I just had a giant flashback to WKRP in Cincinnati where they did a Thanksgiving giveaway, throwing turkeys out of a helicopter! LOL

No, it was those rubber wristbands, lanyards, and a couple of flashdrives.

Great post! 😀 And thank you for this awesome giveaway! So far I’ve read all the books by Melissa Marr, but I have yet to try those other authors. All their books sound fabulous and I’ve had books by Kelley Armstrong in my wishlist for a while. 🙂

LOL – I was going to ask the same question as Carolyn! I was picturing books being hurled at the audience.

Thanks for the recap – I’ve been reading the blogs about this tour and feeling jealous that I couldn’t attend. And love those the nuggets of info – I haven’t fallen in love with Melissa Marr’s YA books, but am intrigued by her upcoming adult one.

    Hi Renee!

No need to enter me in the contest 😀 I just wanted to say it was awesome that you could go to the event!! Sounds like it was a lot of fun! I love Kelley Armstrong and had the chance to meet her twice. She is definitively one of the stronger author out there at the moment. My only complaint is that she’s spreading her work a bit too much (like the limited quantity novella and the comic books…). I had the chance to meet many of the authors at RT and you’re right, they seem to be very close friends 😉

I’m glad you had fun 🙂 What did you get autographed? ;P

Great Giveaway! I want to read all these authors but at the moment I have my eye on Mary Peason’s The Adoration of Jenna Fox.

Looks like is was great fun!

  • 16. Patty  |  September 27, 2010 at 5:05 am

Lucky! I was hoping they would come to where I live, but no luck. I am sooo happy that Kelly Armstrong’s series is extended. Impatiently waiting for The Gathering and I agree The Darkest Powers Trilogy is one of the best!
