June 2010 Book Releases, part 2
June 26, 2010 at 5:00 am
Here are the book releases for the last half of June. The first 3 were released earlier this week, but the rest will be popping up next week. Not a ton of releases here, but they are pretty spread out genre-wise. YA, m/m, UF, and historical romance: it’s all here! 🙂
June 20, 2010: Sleepwalker by Jordan Castillo Price
Here is a book description: |
Daniel Weber (“Web” to his friends) was a promising young biology student on the fast track to a prestigious grad program. That was a year and a half ago. Now he’s working a dead-end security job and living in his cousin’s two-room flat. Thanks to the mysterious George, he’s got gaps in his memory too big for his pocket notebook to fill.
Jesse Ray Jones is the taxidermist who’s trying to help the Faris Natural Sciences Center secure the MAHPS Grant, a funding that would keep the foundering organization afloat for a few more years. He looks like a skatepunk and talks like a science major, which pushes Web’s every last hot-button.
It’s lust at first sight…but hooking up proves difficult when a supervisor at the Center is found bludgeoned to death in the petroglyph alcove—and Jesse and Web are the primary suspects.

June 22, 2010: Nomansland by Lesley Hauge
Here is the description from the author’s site: |
Sometime in the future, after devastating wars and fires, a lonely, windswept island in the north is populated solely by women. Among these women is a group of teenaged Trackers—expert equestrians and archers—whose job is to protect their shores from the enemy. The enemy, they’ve been told, is men.
When these girls come upon a partially buried home from the distant past, they are fascinated by the strange objects—high-heeled shoes, teen magazines, make-up—found there. What are they to make of these mysterious things, which introduce a world they have never known? And what does it mean for their strict society where friendship is forbidden and rules must be obeyed—at all costs?

June 22, 2010: Vintage Murder by Josh Lanyon (LooseID)
Here is a book description: |
Message in a bottle.
Somewhere in the cobwebbed cellar of the decrepit antebellum mansion known as Ballineen are the legendary Lee bottles — and Austin Gillespie is there to find them. The last thing on his mind is hot and heavy romance with handsome bad boy Jeff Brady. But Jeff has other ideas and, after one intoxicating night, so does Austin.
The only problem is they have different ideas. Jeff doesn’t believe in love at first sight, and even if he did, he is buried more deeply in the closet than those famous missing bottle of vintage Madeira.
Popping a cork or two is one thing. Popping the question? No way. No how.
Unless Austin is ready to give up on another dream, he is going to have to figure out how to make sure the lights go on — and stay on — in Georgia.

Kallie Rivière, a fiery Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a talent for trouble, finds herself smack-dab in the middle of one of those times her mentor warned her about when she visits New Orleans to attend the Hecatean Alliance’s annual carnival: her hard-bodied conjurer hookup ends up dead in her blood-drenched bed. And he was killed by something that Kallie would never dream of touching—the darkest of dark juju, soul-eating juju—a black dust hex that may have been meant to kill her.
Now Kallie has to use every bit of hoodoo knowledge and bayou-bred mojo she possesses to clear her own name and find the killer—even as that dark sorcerer hunts Kallie and her friends. But Kallie’s search for the truth soon leads her in a direction she never anticipated—back home to Bayou Cyprés Noir, and to Gabrielle LaRue, Kallie’s aunt, protector, and hoodoo mentor . . . who is looking more and more like she just might be the one who wants Kallie dead.

Captain Christopher Phelan has been corresponding with the beautiful golden-haired Prudence Mercer while he was away fighting in the Crimean War. What he doesn’t know, however, is that the woman who wrote to him is actually Prudence’s best friend, Beatrix Hathaway.

June 29, 2010: Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison
Here is a book description: |
Death
Some people will do anything to avoid it. Even trade their immortal souls for endless existence.
Wraiths
Secretly, inexorably, they are infiltrating our world, sucking the essence out of unsuspecting victims with their hideous parody of a kiss.
Segue
Adam Thorne founded the Institute to study and destroy his monster of a brother, but the key to its success is held in the pale, slender hand of a woman on the run. There is something hauntingly different about Talia O’Brien, her unknowing sensuality, her uncanny way of slipping into Shadow.
Twilight
This is the place between life and what comes after – a dark forest of fantasy, filled with beauty, peril, mystery. And Talia is about to open the door.

June 29, 2010: Tracking the Tempest (Jane True series, book 2) by Nicole Peeler
Here is a book description: |
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and Ryu — Jane’s bloodsucking boyfriend – can’t let a major holiday go by without getting all gratuitous. An overwhelming dose of boyfriend interference and a last-minute ticket to Boston later, and Jane’s life is thrown off course.
Ryu’s well-intentioned plans create mayhem, and Jane winds up embroiled in an investigation involving a spree of gruesome killings. All the evidence points towards another Halfling, much to Jane’s surprise…

This month’s cover award goes to Nicole Peeler’s Tracking the Tempest. I just love how there are small elements in the art that are relevant to the story. When I read book 1, I kept referring to the cover as the images became clear in the book. And, the art itself is just so striking.
I usually have a better handle on the releases, with most already requested from the library or plans made to buy them. This month, however, I’ve been unable to request Love in the Afternoon (in audiobook) from the library due to some glitch, and the rest are still up in the air.
I’ll surely order the JCP and Lanyon in ebook, and get Tracking the Tempest in print, since I love the cover art so much. Beyond that, I’ll hopefully track the others down over the next week.
Oh! And, my review for Kitty Goes to War will be posted. Very soon. Really!
Did I miss any books coming out this month that you’re looking forward to?

Funny, I was just looking at Tempest Rising’s cover yesterday trying to remember what the snakes were. Were there snakes in the book?
Oh, so many of these releases look SOOO good. I hope your summer schedule is evening out a bit more!
2. Renee | June 28, 2010 at 9:47 am
Yes! The snakes were toward the end in the big battle. Giant one(s?).
Thanks, you too! 🙂
3. Chris | June 26, 2010 at 7:46 am

4. Renee | June 28, 2010 at 9:47 am

I love your Upcoming Releases posts 🙂 Thank you Renee!
I so need to read some of Jordan Castillo Price’s books. When Fictionwise actually get around to purchasing her books (maybe I should ask them why they aren’t there) I am so delving in! And I need to read more Josh Lanyon, because after the Adrien English series I’m a huge fan!
Oh, and I finished A Companion to Wolves yesterday. I liked it. It didn’t have the in-depth character development of Melusine (and I haven’t read any of the Elizabeth Bear’s books), but I loved the world building. You are so right. The day-to-day life is…fascinating!
7. Renee | June 28, 2010 at 9:58 am
Thanks, orannia!
Yeah, I think it must have something to do with the fact that she self-publishes. Her older ones are there, though. Hemovore (a stand alone) and The Art of Dying (a novella published with one of my favorites by Josh Lanyon) are there. I’ve been meaning to get to the Channeling Morpheus series for ages! I will one day. 😉
I figure more character depth will come as the ACtW sequel is published. Doctrine of Labyrinths had more than 1 book to develop the characters, and the 1st person povs also give more insight, I think. ::fingers crossed for book 2::
8. Hilcia | June 29, 2010 at 10:36 am
I can’t wait to read Love in the Afternoon by Kleypas. But, I also have Kraken by China Mieville on my June list of “must buy” books. I releases today! That’s it for me. 🙂
9. Renee | June 29, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Still have to read Mieville!
And, still unable to request Love in the Afternoon audiobook from the library. (Though I guess it doesn’t matter too much, since I’m still waiting for Married by Morning. I’m just impatient, like that. lol)
